DANMARK- press release
Jens Haaning
From April 8 to May 14 2005
Opening Friday April 8 2005 from 17-19.
It is a great pleasure to present the exhibition and work DANMARK
by Jens Haaning.
DANMARK is a gallery intervention consisting of seven black letters,
painted on a white wall inside the gallery, spelling the word Danmark
(Denmark in Danish).
The noun formed by the letters signifies the place and state, Denmark.
However more than acting as a redundant sign for a specific country,
the writing on the wall raises questions about nationality and cultural
identity. A whole range of possibilities of interpretations are
let free related to the phenomena Danmark.
The work forms a frame for reflection wherein the audience can reflect
their individual and collective references. This also means that
the content of the work changes character due to peopleÕs individual
stories and relations to Denmark.
The exhibition DANMARK consists also of three other works, Danish
Passport, valid until 28.06.2010, 275 Polish Zloty and 411 Polish
Zloty that question more individual and economic aspects of national
identity.
During the last couple of years Jens Haaning has exhibited extensively
in Europe, Asia, Australia and USA at Documenta, Kassel, ICA, London,
Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin, Biennale of Sydney, Gwangju Biennale,
South Korea, San Francisco Art Institute, Museum Ludwig, Cologne,
Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Migros Museum, Zürich, Wiener Secession,
Vienna, The National Museum of Modern Art, Madrid, Louisiana Museum
of Modern Art, Denmark, Miró Foundation, Barcelona amongst
others.
We are looking forward to welcome you in the gallery!
