hummingbirds and
ashtrays
by Glenn Sorensen, 2000
Hummingbirds and
Ashtrays. Colour, line, comosition, harmony and painting all resulting
in pleasing and seductive paintings is what interests me. What the
painting depicts is in almost all the paintings secondary, the feeling
of the painting is the most important thing. The titles of the paintings
are also important, they can be seductive, suggestive and along
with the choice of colours, line and composition help suggest a
mood. I stop working on a painting when I am pleased with how it
looks. Quite often this takes a long time, probably because my intentions
with a particular painting may change from day to day. This approach
is helped by the small scale of the paintings. A small surface can
easily be changed. Though the main reason why the paintings are
small is because I want them to be personal and intimate, and not
physical and threatening. If there is anything physical about the
paintings it is the wall space they do not occupy. An idea for a
painting can come from anywhere, a pattern on a dress, an image
on television or something someone has said which suggests a nice
image. This is the case with the painting Orange People. The title
came first and I then painted the painting to suit the title in
a suggestive way, not descriptive. The show consists of a small
number of paintings. In this way there is more emphasis on the individual
paintings and this minimal aestheticism is related to the intention
of the paintings.
