my show in the f-room...

My show in the F-Room
at Malmo Konstmusset consists of paintings. There exists a varied
approach between some of the paintings. But they are all about the
same simple things, beauty, feelings and painting. An idea for a
paintings can come from anywhere. A T.V. program is where I received
the idea for Daisy Pattern. It is a painting of the pattern on a
dress Kelly in Married With Children was wearing in an episode.
Sensitive Plant is a painting of the mental picture I received when
a friend described her first painting to me. A painting of a flower
with eyes. The title, Sensitive Plant though is the same title as
a painting by a women pre - raphaelite who gave up painting after
she received negative criticism towards her painting. The idea for
Hands And Feet comes from a book on eastern art I was looking through
in a book shop while waiting for a connecting flight at Singapore
Airport. But I don't consider the source or what the paiting represents
to be important, it is the effect of the painting which I'm interested
in, how the painting effects you or makes you feel. A lot of the
paintings contain flowers. Flowers have an innocence and beauty
which I have found irresistible these last few months. But I really
don't see them as paintings of flowers. The flowers are a device
for a pattern or an effect which interests me. All the paintings
in the show are small. This is a format which I'm comfortable with.
I have tried doing large paintings but they always end up becoming
too ambitious and self-conscious. Small paintings also posses an
intensity and intimacy which I like. Looking at a big painting is
quite often a public experience but looking at a small painting
is quite often a private one. All the paintings in the show where
painted during the last fouteen months and are the paintings which
I'm most satisfied with. They are not painted as a group or a series,
they are independant of each other. The reason why I moved from
my earlier work (installation and performance) to painting was because
I couldn't for the life of me think of what I wanted to say anymore
- those works were made under particular circumstances and when
those circumstances changed so did the work. It feels perfectly
natural. If I can give any advice on how to handle this show it
would be - just try and enjoy the paintings.
