35 pairs
by Gitte Villesen
This work is made
up of a series of 9 photographs, all taken from the same position
in the same direction, with a short pause between each one. The
series came to be by chance. Because of sickness, I was confined
to my apartment, and was bored. When I found a half roll of film
in my camera, I decided to shoot the rest of the pictures. After
having taken pictures of cars and pot holes in the asphalt from
the living room window, and bushes from the kitchen window, I caught
sight of one of my neighbors who had hung up 14 pairs of underwear
to dry. This was more fun than bushes, so I took a picture of it.
A little while later, I saw that she had hung more underwear up,
so I took another picture. Later I realized that she was still hanging
underwear up. From that point on, she had my full attention. I continued
to take pictures of her until she was finished, and had hung up
all 35 identical pairs in four rows. The pictures were shown in
chronological order, with varying distance between each, reflecting
more or less the time that had gone by between each picture. One
of the pictures was shot a little bit higher than the others, so
it was hung a little higher as well.
