of course, the farmer

by Christian Schmidt-Rasmussen
Of course, the farmer
had heard a lot of rumours, but it really took him by surprise that
his vegetables were having unsafe groupsex behind his back The picture
of the amazed farmer is based on a conversation I had with my son,
Lauge, who's 6 years old, about the mysteries of reproduction. Everybody
who's tried, know that it's pretty difficult to explain. Almost
like the infinity of the universe, electricity and those sort of
things. The thing about why children are made seems pretty obvious
to children. They often become a bit schocked at the idea of prevention.
It was the pure technicality of it that had his interest, which
of course, when explained, makes no sense to a 6 year old, and finally
he ended up asking me if it was sort of like the thing about the
bee and the flower. Besides speculating about who had served that
story to Lauge, I found myself in the midst of some rather fruitless
reflections on communication and representation. And then I made
this picture, not as a reply, but as an evasive action. But I should
have foreseen Lauges acute question about why the flower is sucking
the bee's willy. (1996)
